Introduction

This is a simple game for 3 or more players of any age that requires little equipment and provides little scope for arguments. It is so peaceful I often wonder where the in-laws got it from.

Equipment

  • A reference book generally a 'dictionary' as that is how the game got its name. However encyclopedias and the like add more scope.
  • Paper and a writing implement for each player

The Aim

A game consists of a number of rounds where in a single round each player has a turn with the 'dictionary'.

The winner is the one that scores the most points. You do need a relatively (sic) competent scorer who is a full player.

The Game

The player whose turn it is finds a word in the 'dictionary' and reads it out to the other players. Each player must write what they think the definition is on to a slip of paper.

The 'dictionary' player then collects all the other player's definitions and adds a correct one to the pile.

The 'dictionary' player then reads them all out aloud (twice) in a random order.

During the second reading the other players announce which they individually think is the correct answer - the scorer notes this

Scoring

  • The 'dictionary' player gets 10 points if no-one guesses the correct answer.
  • For every incorrect answer 5 points goes to the player whose erroneous definition it was.

Next Player

The dictionary is passed around the scores are precised and the fun continues.

P.S.

Beware fits of giggles may ensue and sleeping people might turn up to tell you to 'keep the noise down'. But it is only them really saying 'I wished I stayed up to play'.
