The PS/2 socket is a small DIN construction about 1cm in diameter. It has a 'keying' hole and 6 pins in a semi circle numbered clockwise looking at the socket.

After bad luck I have discovered it is possible to blowup a PS/2 mouse such that it will not work in a PS/2 socket yet it will work in a COM port socket. Beware of strange serial port behaviour though.
