There's Bloody Hundreds Of Them. Penny!

Interior - Night - Pub

[Rupert]Penny takes pity on Rupert from her work and goes out for a drink with him in a pub as he needs someone to talk to because his cat has been runover "I use that line on all the chicks.". He thinks he is on a date.

[Penny]Vince walks into the same pub with a dizzy blonde from his work whose name he can't remember (Sonia) who loves sex. She orders a large brandy and coke and he buys a brandy and a large coke. Sonia is a big hit at work especially with Mr Bennett. Vince thinks he is thinkng he is onto a sure thing and fawns over her not mentioning more than few words without reverting to smutty inmnuendos. Much to Vince's joy she tells him her parents are away in Toremelonss he can not drink his pint fast enough.

[Sonia]Conversely Penny is calmly drinking a Gin and Tonic and reading the Daily Mail whilst Rupert is buying another round of drinks. He professes to be in the Territorial SAS and attempts to impress her by gettiung her to punch him in the stomach. She can not stand any more and leaves to leaves powder her nose - "Say no More".

[Vincent]Sonia shows Vince an eagle tattoo on her hand and talks of a boy friend Mick who "can't read or write but he formed his own chapter of the Hells Angels in Borstal" She says he is know to follow her and stab people to "hide his basic shyness".

Vince has been trying to give up smoking "Since he started" and is currently branding plastic cigarettes. These have a short life expectancy. He is rather perturbed by teh story of Mick and heads towards the cigarette machine for some of the real stuff.

[Meeting]Vincent loses his money in the machine and starts shaking it as Penny emerges from the powder room she speaks to the back of Vince

PENNY
"I think its broken"
VINCE
"I hope not I'm a vandal"

There is a pause as the voices register and they turn to face each other

VINCE
"It must be 5 years"
PENNY
"5 months and 3 months I guess"
VINCE
"Has it been that long ? I suprise you remember me"
PENNY
"I could never forget you Vincent you've always been .. unique"

A slight breathing on both sides

PENNY
"You're the only bastard who ever jilted me"

Penny briefly mentions how she found out when the best man Lennie (what's his name) round on the day of the wedding to tell her the wedding was off. As the memories surface she puts on her scarf and coat an storms off. Vince leaves to chase her and apologies to Rupert and Sonia on his way out for her exit and catches his coat on the door handle.

Exterior - Night - Pub Car Park

Penny waits anxiously around the corner for him to catch up.

Interior - Night - Pub

Sonia and Rupert are get along famously in the pub as she winds him when he asks her to punch him in the stomach.

Exterior - Night - Pub Car Park

[Mick]They decide to talk in a nearby Italian restaurant and are preparing to make their excuses to their respective 'Dates' when Sonia's boyfriend Mick turns up in his car adourned in leather and studs.

Interior - Night - Italian Restaurant

In the restaurant they recap the 5 years since they alst saw each other. Penny has been working for Matthew - Styles and Liberhem an Advertising Agency in Park Lane

VINCE
"I've got a couple of their LPs at home"

Vince is no longer driving the ice cream van and says he's now an accountant.

PENNY
"Chartered ?"
VINCE
"No turf"

He describes him self as the Assistant Branch Manager. She's not hungry as they exchange pleasantaries avoiding the subject. Small talk ensures

VINCE
"Nice weather we're having"
PENNY
"Nice weather ! Five years ago you walked out on me on our wedding and you want to talk about the bloody weather"

The restuarant hushes. Penny asks why Vincent jilted her and he spins an elobrate story that disguises that his bottle went. He next claims to have been overcome by the responsiblites of a new flat - - a honeymoon in greece - a tumble dryer -a food processor "Cuddly Toy". He finally gives in to the truth that as soon as the

VINCE
"Wedding was mentioned Mother took control ... we became bit players in her grand opera inconspicious by our presence"

He launches in an attack on Penny's mother who he says resented him being the Son a Walthomstow scrap metal dealer whilst she owned a Volvo. He pities Penny's father "Must be like sleeping with a Gurkha" Vince claims he is suffereing form nerves manifesting itself in his smoking whch he is deperatley trying to give up he is now on plastic cigarette having tried various cures including chewing gums and pills. WIth acupucture he was left waiting and

VINCE
"Had a fag to pass the time"
PENNY
"Did you feel a prick ?"
VINCE
"Well I did feel a bit foolish."

Vince explains how having decided no to go thorough with the swedding he sent a telegram. This has obviously got mixed up "Lots of people sent telegrams vince - it was a wedding" with the good luck ones. Penny expalis she never received this and went all the way through the church and was subject to maximum embarassment. Lennie popped round to explain "he asked me out for dinner and but a bid in for some of the presents".

Vincent adds he got his courage back and a year later and went back to her house to watch her from a far but Penny explains they had moved.

The meal comes to an end when the waiter lights up Vince's the plastic cigarette and they walk back to the pub discussing the burden of failure.

Exterior - Night - Pavement

Vincent looks to make ammends

PENNY
"how do you repay someone for 5 years of self doubt - 5 years of nothing"
VINCE
"maybe I can buy you a hand bag ?"

Vincent's moment of seriousness passes when they reach the pub car park and he walks Penny to her car. His BMW "is being serviced" hers is a Red Fiesta.

Exterior - Night - Pub Car Park

The is a scuffle in the pub car park as Rupert is being taken out on a stretcher after coming off the worse in a fracas with Mick. Sonia is in tow.

Penny admits to being different now

VINCE
"You're not a man are you"
PENNY
"I'm married"
VINCE
"... Kids ?"
PENNY
"Yes I suppose that's what we were really"

They lean together to kiss and Penny pulls back thinking she is being taken for granted

PENNY
"you arrogant pig"
VINCE
"You toffee nosed little cow"

The arguement heats up so much they are driven together to kiss. This leads them to arrange (not) to meet the next day in the Red Lion at 8pm. Penny only leaves when she sees Vince writing

The end credits roll and Vince looks up from his notepad realising he doesn't know which Red Lion Penny meant

VINCE
"There's Bloody Hundreds Of Them.... Penny!"
