*Back Fire*

Interior - Day - Pub

[Lennie]Lunchtime the next day Vince is talks to Lennie in a pub they are remembering the old times of Vince's life like the time Moira chucked a fire extinguisher at him. Lennie is very suprised when he mentions he is trying to re-trace Penny having only one clue of a 'Red Lion' pub not knowing where she now lives. Lennie suggests his mate in the police could trace her car

VINCE
"There are more red Fiestas than there are Red Lions Zonko"

As Lennie mentions work Vince leaves to return to work with the problem unsolved.

Interior - Night - Warrender's House

[Daphne]Daphne (Penny's Mother) watches a TV programme about famine snacking on a huge box of chocolates reading 'House And Garden'. Penny returns alone from the Red Lion - a pub she likes because of the Jazz group some evenings.

DAPHNE
"if you like to listen to a lot of men all playing different songs out of tune at the same time"

Norman (Penny's Father) is caught in a traffic snarl up in Epping.

The doorbell rings and Penny answers. It is Vince who doesn't know whose house it is presumes it is the ex-marital home

VINCE
"Good evening madam I'm collecting for old people - do you have an old person you could let me have ?"

[Vincent]Vince is their under the pretext of returning a handkerchief as his was not able to find the pub for their date and has got her home address through charming Penny's best friend

PENNY
"blond hair lots of spots"

Vince is impressed with what he sees expecting she has come up in the world

VINCE
"Nice road you moved into full of conifers and Volvos reminds me of the Red light district in Camberwick green"

Daphne shouts "who is it Darling" and this catches Vince unaware

VINCE
"Oh my god its the alien"

Penny explains she had Flat until about a year ago but took the sensible option of moving back in with her parents

PENNY
"Its alright mummy its a man"
DAPHNE
"Oh that's alright I thought it was your father"

Vince is about to invite Penny to a party when Daphne comes to the door

VINCE
"well well well it's the ice cream man ... A little late for the wedding Vincent we paid off the vicar in 1978"

Daphne is condescending about his family and fraught that Penny has been carrying on with Vince Penny tries to soothe her by explaining why Vince has come round

DAPHNE
"a handkerchief is an article of clothing. to a lady"

The appearance of Daphne changes Penny's intent from trying to get rid of Vincent to inciting him in against her wishes.

PENNY
"This is as much my house as it is yours"
DAPHNE
"Who pays the mortgage ?"
PENNY
"Daddy"
DAPHNE
"Exactly so it is mine"

They retire to the living room with much verbal sparring whilst Penny tries to intervene. Daphne smokes

VINCE
"Lots of Volvos. Must be Swedish week in Chipping Ongar"

Vince shows no remorse over the wedding so Daphne turns the conversation to Penny's pain then on to her own

DAPHNE
"god knows how I suffered"

She relates all her past experiences of Vincent how he brought Penny "My only child" home on a motorcycle

DAPHNE
"Silver dream machine and its eternal backfiring"
DAPHNE
"I even welcomes his family in to my home and indulged there passions for Australian sherry and Spam coloured cars"

She paints her self as a matyr tolerating their relationship for Penny's happiness. Vince just stands and takes it so Daphne storms out into the kitchen

DAPHNE
"if anyone need me I'll be in the breakfast nook"
VINCE
"she's mellowed"

Penny tries to make out she never wants to see Vince again she want to "forget about you ... again" Vincent accepts this then starts to leaves he casually says "See you" to which Penny deperately adds (When ?).

Daphne returns at this crucial moment and starts Vince's family. He tries to defend them saying they have changed the "Old pink mustang" for a "new turquoise Pontiac". This does not stop Daphne.

Les (Vince's Dad) did something in the ornamental pond that she cant forget "I don't the fish will either" and then turns on to Rita (Vince's Mother) "Does your mother still ... enjoy drinking".

Vince thwarts her by spining a story about Rita's illness and current coma state reducing Penny almost to tears with his coup de grace "it was her birthday. I bought her a hat".

[Norman]Norman walks straight in form work "Hello darling ... Penny ... Vince" without turning a hair. He does a double take before remarking on the coincidence have just seen Rita coming out of Halfords. When it transpires she didn't have an "Iron Lung" attached to her Daphne and Penny are disgusted at Vince's charade. Daphne tries to get Norman to tell him off but he ends up offering Vince a drink.

DAPHNE
"Your father is so wet I wonder why he wasn't born with a stopcock"

She is angry Vince has never shown any gratitude for what they did for them. This launches Vince into a tirade

VINCE
"She was trying to clone us. We were just spores that she was going to distribute throughout The Woodford area to await the satanic spring when we would rise up through he sunroof of the Company Volvo."

He continues with the further class aspirations of Daphne

VINCE
"Volvos designed by experts built by specialists and driven by prats .. Its erhh that your Volvo parked out in the drive"

Vincent apologizes for telling the tall tale trying to get sympathy and leaves for the Red Lion to get a drink. Daphne arrives to say goodbye and comment on his mode of transport (his father's van) has not progressed from his earlier modes

DAPHNE
"It looks like it backfires"
VINCE
"Your cocktail cabinet looks like a genuine antique but it isn't"

Vince leaves before doing anymore damage and Daphne turns to Penny

DAPHNE
"He'll hurt you again darling"
PENNY
"He couldn't. We're just good fiends .. that's all"

Interior - Night - Red Lion

[Penny]Penny joins Vince down the pub saying how much Mother enjoyed the row. Vince admits to right old belters with her before. Penny apologises for a time 6 months 'after' the wedding when she saw a motorbike with the numberplate VIP "Vincent Ian Pinner" and its rider is black tinted visor - suede jacket. She beeped him he v-signed her and she chased after him and knocked him off thinking it was Vince.

Vince claims he sold to bike to make her feel guilty about hitting someone else Penny distraught

VINCE
"love is never having to say naff off"

He drives Penny home in his father's van her home than admits it was him she knocked off

VINCE
"it was me you nearly killed that day"
PENNY
"that god for that"

He tells her how he went 120 yards down the High Street and it took 5 hours to get the bike out of the telephone box. As he mentions the injuries - his left hand - collar bone - rib and she kisses them all. This turns into gentle necking and sparks start flying as the old magic returns. Penny leaves in anxiety "Goodbye Vince".

As the credits roll he attacks the van door to let her out. She walks in to her home and Daphne can be seen upstairs fraught listening to the all too common backfire indicating there is trouble ahead.
