VINCE
"As I said to Debbie Matthews nature walk in Epping Forest there's a first time for everything"
LES
"But you and Debbie Matthews were expelled"
VINCE
"Yeah that's the way to go"

His father breaks out the universal equaliser a bottle of spirits

LES
"What's your problem .. drink"
VINCE
"No nothing like that"

[Vincent][Les]His father recounts some of the scrapes he has been thorough in the past including a love bite on big toe "It was very dark" and how and Rita (Vince's mother) had survived them.

LES
"By he time he's 15 he'll be over it
Some hope."

Les guessed it is about a woman and notes this is the first time he has come to ask him for advice since the last time - with Penny

VINCE
"Its funny you should mention it but she's very much like her
well in the way that it is her"
LES
"That posh girl from Chipping Ongar"
VINCE
"you'll jump to conclusion if I said that last night we ended up in bed together"

His father listens as he pours out his heart in a dignified manner and talk gets round to Vince jilting Penny. He blames it on her family again

VINCE
"Her mother's a Martian... There were programming me like a microchip by the time I walked down the aisle I'd look like Metal bloody Mickey. That may be the way with Martian weddings but it didn't go down to well with this Walthamstow boy."

Les tries to be sympathetic but has little understanding he is out of his depth

LES
"I was you father"
VINCE
"you still are"

Vince reaches the crux of his problem

VINCE
"How do you tell girl who 5 years ago you promised to marry - jilted her at the altar - betrayed her trust and emotionally scarred her for life that you love her ?"
LES
"How the hell do I know"

After the sudden sentimentally Vince quickly goes back to admiring himself in the mirror

LES
"Tell her the truth"
VINCE
"it ain't that bad"

Vince decides to act on the advice to phone Penny immediately - he spends the rest of this episode trying to say these few precious words.

Interior - Day - Cross cuts to Warrender's House

VINCE
"Hello Mr. Warrender oh sorry Mrs. Warrender"
DAPHNE
"Drunk again Vincent"
VINCE
"Yeah so am I Mrs. Warrender"

Daphne is dressed in dark blue hat and suit and fetches Penny

VINCE
"I've been thinking"
PENNY
"You know what the doctor told you"

But no matter what (Boyzone again) he can't get the words out and settles for "See you at 8:30".

Exterior - Day - Pinner Metals Yard

Vince leaves the office and finds Les looking with pride at the scrap yard

LES
"One day it will all be yours"
VINCE
"I don't want it"

Interior - Day - Warrender's House

Daphne is watching peoples a March For Jobs '83 on the television

DAPHNE
"Its a revolution ... If I had my way any body found on the right to work march would be sacked"

The pointless conversation continues with Norman she makes a gaffe fluffing her lines

DAPHNE
"I also think the publish/public wants more say in the program that are made"

Norman is constructing a model boat like 'the Victory' and he enthusiastically goes to sail it in the kitchen - these kits are not meant to float.

Penny argues with her mother about .. Vince. She is determined to be her own person.

PENNY
"Its your house your furniture but my life"
DAPHNE
"You only bumped into it 3 weeks ago and already you've become so Brookside"

Daphne tries to get Penny to indulge more in her social life

DAPHNE
"Anyone but Vince ... even a one legged Chinese kitchen hand with hepatitis"

[Penny][Daphne]They discuss Penny's and Graham's first date in a vegetarian restaurant at 7 mins past 8 "And guess what time her turned up" and 2 1/2 years of marriage in which they "watched Jasper Carrot and bought a Flymo".

Penny compares life with Graham "a law-abiding decent man" and Vince "what will we do- where will we go - will he be there ?".

PENNY
"If Graham asked me round to his place for something to eat I know he's found something different to do with brown rice. When Vince asks you round to his place for something to eat you know he means breakfast."

Shockingly Daphne does not contradict her

PENNY
"Is it me have you been agreeing me ?"
DAPHNE
"I haven't always been you mother Penny once ... I was a woman"

Her eyes glaze over as she lights a cigarette and sighs

DAPHNE
"I was passionate animal once ... well more than one actually.
Your father wasn't the first .. he just wasn't the first"

In a well meant touching moment Daphne relates one her twists in the tale anecdotes trying to say she knows excitement.

She recounts her relationship with David and their trip to Selsy Bill

PENNY
"I've heard its very nice there"
DAPHNE
"So have I
we were together for 2 days and 2 nights
It was the first time I enjoyed my self without laughing"

The story progresses with Penny on the edge of smirking as Daphne loses her love when he goes to Korea.

PENNY
"Korea ? Vincent likes to assert his independence by going to pub or the dogs"

[Norman]He went to war from "NAAFI store to NAAFI store" and she lost touch until meeting and old school friend - Edna Springer "nice girl big feet" who had met David in a military hospital.

Daphne had become engaged to Norman

PENNY
"Oh mummy he died ?"
DAPHNE
"No he married Edna Springer"

Daphne married Norman not on the "Rebound more like a ricochet" as "with men like your father you always know the rates will be paid".

Norman walks through from the kitchen with his wet boat that has obviously sunk.

DAPHNE
"Did your father hear?"
PENNY
"No I'm sure he didn't"
DAPHNE
"Perhaps I should have spoken louder then"

Interior - Night - Pub

Vince is preoccupied with trying to get the words out that he misses a joke "Do you see much of Noddy These days?".

Penny is anxious to discuss what nearly happened last night

DAPHNE
"For god sake Vince we went to bed together"
VINCE
"Its alright she's my sister"

Penny make sit clear that love is not her agenda and last night she was under "more stress than Concorde's wing".

[Girl]Vince smiles at a girl to which Penny shows hurt but shrugs it off

PENNY
"Friends don't become angry or jealous just because you smile at some tart"

Vince takes this as a green light and goes off to talk to the girl. Penny tries to even the score by talking to men at the bar.

PENNY
"Cough Hia I'm Penny"

The reply is an effeminate "Hello I'm robin" there then follows a delicious pause that is master stroke of comic timing as Penny turns to the man's companion

PENNY
"That must make you Batman"

[Batman And Robin]Penny realises she is out of place "You would have more luck" and interrupts Vince's chatting up by taking him is drink. She leaves him with a "Don't go to Korea".

Vince has abandoned tact in his pursuit

VINCE
"Do you fancy a quick one ?"

The girls hand him her empty glass "Thankyou".

VINCE
"OK we'll have a drink first"

Interior - Day - Warrender's House

The phone rings and Penny rushes to answer it but misses "Damn you Vincent Pinner" the credits roll.

The phone rings again and Penny answers it

VINCE
"Hello Pen It's Me - Vince"

Penny gloriously hangs up on him.
