I'll Get Me Coat

Interior - Day - Dentist waiting room

[Mrs Beeton]Penny is awaiting the dentist she is reading a pregnancy magazine and squirming at the graphic pictures Mr Beecham comes to talk to her

MRS BEETON
"whatever you never get a carbuncle ... its worse than having a baby"
PENNY
"really"

Penny is obviously holding something back luckily the talk turns to her recent holiday with

MRS BEETON
"Alison .. you friend girl from the office the one your mother said you were going on holiday with"
PENNY
"Oh that Alison"

Interior - Day - Dentist

[Dentist]Penny is shown in and made to lie on a reclining chair. She is to have an x-ray of that naughty little one at the back

She looks around waiting til Mrs Beecham is out getting her file before broaching the delicate subject

PENNY
"Can an x-ray harm a child"
DENTIST
"Child ? - what age"
PENNY
"Young"
DENTIST
"How young"
PENNY
"Very young like unborn"

Mrs Beecham is seen to gloat over hearing this as she walks back in. The dentist decides not to x-ray so MB ask whether he will be needing

MRS BEETON
"MISS Warrender's file"

Interior - Day - Vince's flat

Penny enters and walks into the kitchen where Vince is preparing something

VINCE
"won't keep you a moment = take your clothes off and lie on the couch .. Oh its you Pen"

[Vincent]Penny sits down and asks for Vince's attention

PENNY
"Vince I'm pregnant - well say something"
VINCE
"Congratulations"

Vince is for once knocked of his feet if a little confused

VINCE
"The dentist told you - you were pregnant"
PENNY
"No on my way round here I popped into the Doctors"
VINCE
"And he told you ?"
PENNY
"Yes ... No ... he said he'd get the results back in a couple of days"

Vince is not convinced knowing about her past Penny is adamant

PENNY
"A woman knows these things she just knows"
VINCE
"You could be wrong Pen I mean be fair You've always been a bit of a panicker - look at that time you thought you had shingles and it turns out your jeans were too tight"
PENNY
"this hasn't been caused by tight jeans has it"
VINCE
"could have been"

Penny proclaims her belief yet Vince is still skeptical

VINCE
"I remember years ago every single month you were like this - we ended on first name terms with the manager of Mothercare - we invited him to the wedding"
PENNY
"And he turned up"

Vincent can not calm her down as she starts worrying about siserians. Penny just wants sympathy but Vince is trying to realistic

VINCE
"this could have been caused by something simple"
VINCE
"It was cau1sed by something simple - YOU"

Vincent goes to pour a drink

VINCE
"Gin and Tonic ?"
PENNY
"Do you think I should"
VINCE
"I think we both should"

Vince pauses then pour himself a half pint of Gin

PENNY
"we must stop bickering like this I know we've always had a stormy relationship but the way things are going I'll end up with morning sea sickness"

Vince manages to calm her down except Penny being scared at the prospect of telling her mother

VINCE
"We could send her a kissogram. If it has to be said let me tell her"
PENNY
"No Vince I couldn't let you"
VINCE
"Go on"
PENNY
"What do you want to be when you grow up"
VINCE
"A spaceman"
PENNY
"I thought you were being careful"
VINCE
"So did I - I mean I thought you were"
PENNY
"well no"
VINCE
"why"
PENNY
"because I thought you were"
VINCE
"But I wasn't"
PENNY
"Well I know that now"
VINCE
"Its a total lack of communication Pen"
PENNY
"From where I'm standing I think we communicated a little too well"

Penny indicates that the company was going to send her to Europe and that would be spoilt

PENNY
"And how are they going to feel about me being an unmarried mother"
VINCE
"You won't be a unmarried mother Pen .. you're still married to Graham"

Penny worries it could affect her divorce in 2 weeks

PENNY
"By the time I walk into that courtroom I'll most probably look like a Mister Man"

Vince's 'ratfink' tactics has wound down her anxiety as she relaxes slightly

PENNY
"What am i going to do"
VINCE
"Well if the worst comes to the worst I suppose I'll have to marry you"

Vince tells how his parents have invited them for dinner

PENNY
"I'm frightened"
VINCE
"Hey come on Pen everything's going to be aright I know my mother can be a heavy going at times but she's a good cook"

Penny begins to wander about the birth

PENNY
"Will you be with me ?"
VINCE
"I'll be there Pen I'll be just outside that door"

I want you with me I want to feel your hand in mine

VINCE
"You wont be able to feel my hand in yours you'll be in too much pain"

Interior - Night - Pinner's kitchen dinner

[Clifford]Rita shows penny round the garden whilst Vince and Clifford spar Vince knows that Clifford has broken new cassette. Les enters he has been trying without much luck to get rid of Clifford by getting him to join the navy

LES
"A few years training with a bit of luck you could end up like Prince Andrew"
PC
"what A captain"
LES
"No a decoy for Exocet missiles"

Vince tries to get a private word in with his dad but Clifford refuses to move - Les forces him

LES
"Cos if your brother's got a problem its either illegal or amoral"
PC
"So how am I ever going to learn"

[Les]When the pair are alone Vince starts

VINCE
"Pen's gone and got herself pregnant"
LES
"Well there's a clever boy"
VINCE
"Wasn't my fault"
LES
"No of course not you were just playing leap frog"

They discuss if Rita showed any signs of pregnancy

LES
"It hard to tell with your mother"

Clifford sidles in denying hearing anything then Rita and Penny return from seeing the multi covered waterfall

They are going to eat 'Chicken Rita'

LES
"Sounds like one of Kunta Kinte's old flames"
PENNY
"I thought you were going to tell your mother I'm a vegetarian"
VINCE
"I did shes said she's going to open a tin of peas for you"

Interior - Night - Pinner's kitchen dinner

[Rita]They have finished the meal as Clifford goes to put the dishes in the dishwasher Rita is talking like an express train

RITA
"Do us a sherry Les"
LES
"you are supposed to have sherry before the meal Rite"
RITA
"I can't be doing with all hat rubbish have what you want when you fancy it that's what say"

Rita dissects airs and graces referring to a Warrender's do

RITA
"I'll never forget that meal we had just before your wedding - you little sod"

She tells of how Daphne instructed her in the consumption of asparagus spears

RITA
"Daphne darling I'll eat the lot to show I'm not ignorant"

She asks if Penny has enjoyed the meal

RITA
"we don't know much about weirdo food"

Clifford joins them after disposing of the washing up

PC
"Penelope .. I don't know if you'd be interested but my mate's sister's got a cot fore sale"
PENNY
"Go away you horrible boy"

Rita tells Clifford off for 'earwigging' but suddenly the baby reference clicks and she screams her head off. Les tries to point out its not definite but

RITA
"I'm certain a woman knows"

Les is very proud

LES
"it might be a worrying time for you and Pen but its a historic occasion for your mum and me. I almost feel like crying96+-"
VINCE
"Yeah well go and have a look at your new cassette then"

Rita offers a shoulder and lots of advice Les just cringes

RITA
"I've been through it all Darling baby at 16 - married at 17 .. the doctor said Miss Maynard you've got more stitches than a made to measure suit .. go private Les'll treat you ... don't have one of those natural births get all the drugs you can .. my water broke in Sainsbury's"
VINCE
"Give it a rest Rite you make the miracle of live sound like the flight plans for the Dambusters"

Les disappears to get some champagne Rita foes to get the glasses

RITA
"If its a girl will you call it Fallon [To cliff] You nosey little sod"

Interior - Night - Warrender's kitchen

[Daphne]Penny wanders in and there is a considerable silence as she gets herself some milk. Daphne wanders in and it is apparent she knows.

DAPHNE
"Mrs Beecham came round earlier .. she bought you a present a christening shawl"

Daphne is distraught after finding out like this she explained it away Penny and Graham patching it up she hasn't even told Norman

DAPHNE
"That'll teach you to go to Portugal"

Penny assures her that she would have told her when she was a 100% sure that it was not a false alarm. She starts to imply how many times this has happened when she realizes she hasn't ever told her mother about any of them

Daphne asks how it will affect Graham but Pen does not care Daphne is appalled as Graham has given her

DAPHNE
"everything from happiness to a divorce"

[Penny]Suddenly she sees a ray of hope thinking Vince might not be the father

DAPHNE
"I take it that is ..."
PENNY
"Don't even ask"

The upsetting continues as Daphne realize how long down the line of finding out she has been especially the dentist who wanted to take an x-ray

PENNY
"x rays can cause abnormalities in an unborn child"
DAPHNE
"Seeing who the father is I shouldn't think you'd notice much difference"

Finding that the Pinner's know

DAPHNE
"I could have read it tomorrow's telegraph"

In full rant she is blaming all and sundry - penny tries to rationalize it

DAPHNE
"oh I see my morals are modern enough perhaps daddy and I should take to smoking cannabis resin we could start the Chipping Ongar branch of the Sid vicious remembrance society"

Penny threatens to move out and in with Vince

DAPHNE
"Attitudes to that kind of thing don't change"

Daphne believes Vince will not stand by her

DAPHNE
"He'll be off at the first sign of back ache"

She tell this sad story of a girl she used to know who had a bad slice of life and it seems to about her. Penny is moved and empathizes with her asking if the girl was her

DAPHNE
"It most certainly was not .. and I was her best friend the little trollop"

Interior - Day - Doctor waiting room

[Receptionist]All is tense as they await the results. Vince has a cigarette in his mouth much to the distress of the receptionist

VINCE
"I've got shoes on my feet but I'm not wal1king"

Vince proclaims he is nervous of tests like the one had when he had a bad chest after giving up smoking

PENNY
"Mummy told me a story last night"
VINCE
"She'll never let you grow up"

Penny retells the story

VINCE
"Your mother knows some real belters doesn't she"

Penny has been awake all night worrying whether Vince will stand by her

PENNY
"Of course I trust you - You Know I trust you - I Just thought I'd ask that's all"

[Bunny]The credits roll as penny goes into the doctor Vince eyes up a nurse indicting he is till itchy

In a master continuity stroke it was all a false alarms Penny is slightly anemic (As Vince had already pointed out) due to her diet she needs supplements

They are both seemingly overjoyed. As Vince goes to get his coat she bursts unseen into tears and he pulls a baby's rabbit out of his coat and leaves it on the receptionist desk
