Interior - Day - Restaurant

[Penny] Vince and Penny are in a restaurant eating salad drinking red wine

Penny is on a another planet as Vince's jibes just bounce off her.

They plan to go to Lennie and Angie's engagements part next Saturday. But Vince tries to shake her out of it

VINCE
"To a very special day"

PENNY
"What's so special about it ?"

VINCE
"Yes I suppose you're right Pen its just an average sort of day get up in the morning a bit of breakfast pop down the court get divorced - go to lunch"

Penny is feeling numb at the clinicalness of the divorce and likens it to having a bunion removed

PENNY
"It wasn't that bad"

VINCE
"Come on Pen after all you said about him ?"

PENNY
"We had our good times"

VINCE
"Name 1"

PENNY
"Theres no need to push me into a corner Vince"

Pen confesses that graham has done her some good by recommending her for a management training course

Vince see thorough it

PENNY
"This course would mean you have to go away - don't you see Graham wasn't trying to help your career he was just trying to break us up"

Penny tries to forgive Graham

VINCE
"you're too nice Pen that's your trouble ... look at you now your emotions re doing the Ali shuffle"

Well its over now Pen - you won so just sit back and enjoy the victory

PENNY
"I better drink this wine then I've got an interview with Harry Carpenter in a minute"

Penny goes over how easy a victory the divorce was she expected a fight.

PENNY
"Will you ask me to marry you"

VINCE
"Well I asked you once before and you laughed in my face"

PENNY
"yews I know I'm sorry - ask me again please"

VINCE
"All right Penny"

PENNY
"yes"

VINCE
"Will you marry me"

Penny bursts out laughing

PENNY
"Sorry I just needed cheering up"

Vince is serious and Penny is caught back yet is enjoying the idea

As soon as I reach my decision you'll be the first to know

Interior - Day - Pinner's Kitchen

[Norman] Penny is worried and Norman is taking an interest [Daphne]

PENNY
"Vince has proposed"

NORMAN
"Who to ?"

PENNY
"Ha ha me"

NORMAN
"Oh I see"

Penny tries to convince him Vince is not as bad as he sounds

NORMAN
"Its not that Darling - I'm just wondering how I was going to pay for it"

PENNY
"Don't worry about that if we do decide to get married Vince and I will pay for it"

NORMAN
"No I'll pay for it after all I've paid for all your other weddings"

Daphne comes in and hears the wedding talk - when she finds out she starts going mad. Penny is being rational

PENNY
"It isn't an easy decision my future lies in the balance - I can either accept the company's offer - build a career - travel - have total fulfillment and enjoyment of life. Or I could marry Vince"

Daphne is hocked

DAPHNE
"Norman you speak to hear"

NORMAN
"You do whatever you think best darling"

DAPHNE
"Keep out of the is Norman"

Daphne continues the fight

DAPHNE
"What can Vincent Pinner possibly offer you compared with seeing the world and having a future"

PENNY
"Silly little things like being with the person you most want to be with - do you understand"

DAPHNE
"No"

DAPHNE
"Its every young girl's dream"

PENNY
"Mummy I'm not a young girl I'll be 29 next birthday"

Penny's dreams are confused by her biological clock

PENNY
"like ... well ... Children and I'd like to have them while I'm young enough to avoid all those special test"

DAPHNE
"I understand what your saying darling but in this day and age you can do both. You can go on the training course you can attain management level and then ... adopt"

Daphne starts doing down Vince and building up graham

DAPHNE
"I've never seen you so happy as when you were with him and even when you had that silly nervous breakdown what did Graham do he took you off on holiday to that little town where he was born"

NORMAN
"I didn't know you'd been to Bethlehem darling"

Penny explains that Vince will inherit al the scrap metal yards and sell then for

PENNY
"2 and a half million pounds"

NORMAN
"2 and a half million pounds ?"

DAPHNE
"well I've said all I'm going to say - you must do as you think fit"

Interior - Night - Vince's flat

Penny arrives with her suitcases and sits down Vince serves her a G&T

PENNY
"Vince do you mind if I ask you something ?"

VINCE
"What's that"

PENNY
"Why have you got a hair drier hanging around your neck"

VINCE
"My lucky charm Pen. Do you mind if i ask you something what are you doing here ?"

PENNY
"What am I ? You invited me over for the weekend remember ?Oh yes I forgot sorry"

VINCE
"Yeah for the weekend Pen - this is Friday"

After a brief discussion about their work and the relativeness of weekends

PENNY
"Absolutely perfect I'm a day early"

VINCE
"Never mind Pen it makes a change"

Penny refuses to go home Vince say she can stay

PENNY
"Going out are we ?"

VINCE
"No"

PENNY
"Erhh why the blazer the tie and all the smellies"

VINCE
"were not going out - I'm going out"

Vince for once has not got another woman lined up

VINCE
"Its Lennie's stag night"

PENNY
"... But hes only getting engaged"

Vince feigns the fact he doesn't have to go but Penny relents allowing him to go the 'local' pub with Stan Lawrence and a few of the others.

He promises to be by 11:00 and bring her back a vegetarian dish from the bamboo house

Interior - Day - Vince flat

Vince returns late - Penny coat and case are missing she is in his bed - he undresses to join her she wakes up so he changes his tact

PENNY
"its six o'clock in the morning"

VINCE
"Yeah couldn't sleep Pen - thought I may as well get up and do us a bit of breakfast"

Interior - Night - A pub

melancholic music

Vince is drinking after work eyeing up a girl and Penny walks in after having left his flat when she got bored

She asks what time he got in last night

VINCE
"must have been after 12"

PENNY
"I sat up till half past five in the morning waiting for you. I hadn't been in bed long when you came in - six o'clock wasn't it ?"

VINCE
"well like I said Pen it was gone twelve"

Vince blames Lennie for wanting to go to a night club but Penny is not fussed about that

PENNY
"Why did you take that girl home ?"

VINCE
"Who told you ?"

PENNY
"You just did"

Penny doesn't want to hear any explanations she explains how she deals with it

PENNY
"I lie to myself - its an art I perfected over the years - a kind of self preservation technique - I used to be able to convince myself of virtually anything black was white - day was night - you were telling the truth"

She now admits that since her divorce things are different

PENNY
"For the first time in I don't know how long I'm free"

Vince reminds here of the fact that they will be getting married

PENNY
"We won't be getting married in the now or distant future - we're not getting married full stop"

VINCE
"What are you trying to say Pen"

Vince is aghast as he has told everyone. Penny revels in this

PENNY
"You had no right to tell them did - you'll just have to untell them"

VINCE
"well how do I do that ?"

PENNY
"Oh its easy Vince I had to do it once remember"

VINCE
"Oh I see what this is all about now this is just revenge"

PENNY
"No it isn't revenge if I wanted revenge I would have married you"

VINCE
"Well tell me why"

PENNY
"Because you're a thoughtless - insensitive - selfish - worthless - faithless bastard - that's why"

VINCE
"Is that the only reason ?"

PENNY
"No I don't love you"

Penny explains how she feels it is different this time as something she can't pout her finger on is missing. This has been prompted by finding that Vince has kept all her old love letters

VINCE
"Did you keep mine"

PENNY
"Yes ITS in my jewelry box"

She tells how she is now a different person form all those years ago

PENNY
"Vince There's no one else"

VINCE
"Course there isn't Pen"

PENNY
"No I mean there's no one lese in my life"

VINCE
"Oh I know that Pen"

PENNY
"Well actually that's not entirely true - there is someone else"

VINCE
"Who ?"

PENNY
"Me"

Penny recounts how she has belonged to someone all here adult life

PENNY
"And my mother thinks I'm Bonnie Langford"

Vince explains about last night and how he took Lennie and the girl to a hotel and waited for 3 hours for them. He hopes this will patch it up with Penny

PENNY
"Something's missing"

VINCE
"... what is this thing ?"

PENNY
"I can't describe it"

VINCE
"Well what does it look like .. I might be able to pick one up at Unipart"

Suddenly all is out in the open - Vince is calling off their wedding just trying to get back to normal but Penny is adamant and she is leaving to go on the company course

PENNY
"Brussels or Paris I'm not sure yet"

PENNY
"Suppose you're hoping for Brussels being a vegetarian"

Penny begins to cry

PENNY
"Well this is the first day of the rest of my life - what a bloody rotten start"

Vince is desperately clutching at straws claiming he has already started to change

VINCE
"I mean I hardly drink any more - I hardly drink any less either"

It is all futile

PENNY
"I've made up my mind I'm going and don't look at me like that you remind me of Bambi"

Penny reassures Vince he will meet another girl soon but Vince is not convinced

VINCE
"She wont kick me in the shins when I annoy her and she won't put semicolons in her love letters"

Penny rises to leave throwing off all Vince's desperate attempts at keeping their friendship going - she is flooding with tears

There is a discussion about how they should meet up again in a years time as the saw in some French film and a quip "I've never done anything to hurt you" - "Tell my shins that".

The passion however erupts in a great outburst of the cruelty associated with the self inflicted solidarity

VINCE
"I love you Pen"

PENNY
"Shut up - Let me walk away"

Credits roll as Penny leaves

[Vincent] Vincent is about to leave when he passes the girl he was eyeing earlier he stops turns around and smiles
