Thank God For A Friendly Voice

Interior - Day - Vince And Penny's flat

[Penny]Vince is talking to his lawyer Adrian - about the divorce proceedings. Adrian lawyer tries to make him promise to behave. Penny enters the flat unseen with some shopping and pokes a bottle of champagne through e door suggestively putting on a terrible french accent and gradually inching in as a high kicking flusie much to the amusement of Vince and Adrian

PENNY
"Vincent when you return this evening we shall drink champagne and then we shall make the passion love"

As she fully appears in the room all goes a deadly silence till Vince formally introduces them Adrian eyes her up wryly

ADRIAN
"Nice to meet you Penny I've read a lot about you - the petition - statements that kind of thing -. I must admit you;re nothing like the mental picture I had of you"
PENNY
"Oh I'm not quite sure what to say is that a compliment ?"

Both Vince and Adrian reply as one in the affirmative -they cackle together like a stereo recording. Adrian restresses to Vince that he should say nothing despite what is said. He relates how he has know Vince for many years and knows of his childish outbursts.

VINCE
"Theres a very clever woman try to take 50% of everything I worked for and I'm not allowed to shout mayday."
ADRIAN
"You just leave that to me - I will describe to the court the kind of mean calculating woman we are dealing with and I will also describe the kind of man you are"
PENNY
"Excuse me Adrian- couldn't that prejudice his case ?"
ADRIAN
"well I'm not aiming to tell the truth"

[Adrian]The pair bursting to cackles again. Adrian describes his defence of Vince including his weaknesses. Penny interrupts a very fluent speech

PENNY
"Where was all this allure of forbidden fruit and temptations of the flesh supposed to have taken place ?"
ADRIAN
"Well in Paris"
PENNY
"Where was I ?"
VINCE
"You were the forbidden fruit"
PENNY
"I certainly was not"
VINCE
"I know there wasn't allure of forbidden fruit and temptations of the flesh - there was just you - but for the purposes of .."
PENNY
"What you mean there was just you"
VINCE
"I don't belive it do you want to be the allure of forbidden fruit and temptations of the flesh or don't you ?"
PENNY
"No I do not"
VINCE
"Well id you stop interrupting Adrian .."
PENNY
"I never interrupt"

Adrian butts into the argument to ask if they really are going to get married after the divorce. They reply yes in unison. Adrian grins

ADRIAN
"Would you mind If I left my card ?"

He resets them back on to the path of Vince's defence. He explains they have negotiated to Penny's name not appear on any proceedings and not to mention the "murky pool" of what happened in Paris. Penny objects to this and explains how romantic it all was

VINCE
"We'll be addressing a hard nosed old circuit judge - not the chairman of Mills And Boon"

Penny is still irate and insists on telling the truth where as Vince is hiding behind Adrian's story. An argument erupts

ADRIAN
"It wasn't me that jumped into the sack with him .. well its her - I see what you meant now"

They agree to disagree and leave Penny to go to court simply to stop Gina's claim on the estate. Arranging to meet after work

PENNY
"Be a brave soldier - good luck fat rat"

Interior - Day - Warrender's kitchen

[Daphne]Daphne emerges with the post Norman is very happy

DAPHNE
"There're all bills Norman"
NORMAN
"Well I wish they'd deliver them to Bill's house"
DAPHNE
"don't be pithy Norman"
NORMAN
"Sorry dear just trying to cheer you up"
DAPHNE
"Well don't it depresses me"

Daphne is haranguing Norman to look for jobs. Norman emphasises he has a job with Vince but hasn't started because of the divorce proceedings. Daphne is skeptical about Vince

NORMAN
"He promised me the job"
DAPHNE
"And In 1978 he promised Penny he'd turn up for her wedding - then he discovered he has something really important to do. 18 months ago he promised to love and honour and protect that poor wife of his. In 2 hours he's divorcing her."

[Norman]Norman points out that Gina is actually divorcing Vince for alleged adultery

DAPHNE
"What do you mean alleged he has my daughter imprisoned in a furnished flat in downtown Wanstead"

Daphne is all upset about Penny she says she has found something damming under her bed

DAPHNE
"It was her Crackerjack Pencil - given to her personally by Anita Harris. Do you remember that day darling ?"
NORMAN
"Yes of course I do"
DAPHNE
"How old would she have been then"
NORMAN
"About 22 - oh Penny 11 at the most"

Norman still glowing about the memory of Anita Harris reassures Daphne that "thing" is sincere and Penny is no longer a little girl

DAPHNE
"Think back Norman 2 days before he jilted her on the steps of the altar he gave her an eternity ring"

They return to discussing the new job

PENNY
"Pinner plonk does not exist ..I see so you are a contracted advisor whose has no contract to a wine imported who has no wine"

Daphne launches into her best tirade on the Pinners ending with

DAPHNE
"What happens when someone of average intelligence tells them their vineyards is an allotment and their grapes are gooseberries ?"

Daphne storms out as Norman opens a letter it is the employment contract. He calls her back and having seen the figures she recants all the insults. She blows the dust of credit cards

Interior - Day - Penny's flat

[Gina]Gina rings Penny to check Vince hasn't forgotten the appointment and there starts a bit of the old fur flying insults. Penny claims to have educated Vince onto heathy eating (Museli)

GRAHAM
"Well he may not always be happy with you Edna (Penny) but at least he wont be constipated"
PENNY
"Gina"
GRAHAM
"Yes"
PENNY
"Balls"

She slams the phone down and it rings again

PENNY
"What .. Oh mummy .. what about Anita Harris ?"

Interior - Day - Pinner's Villa

[Rita]Rita worried about the pool not being cleaned. Les is reading and is worried about the 'tanks' Vince bought as scrap metal.

RITA
"How do they know they are the same 6 tanks my Vinny sold"
LES
"Cos when those tanks drove off the docks in Luanda they had Pinner metals Walthamstow stuck all over them. The are weapons of War Rite .. what are we going tell the authorities we were sponsoring them for a rally -"
RITA
"It weren't my Vinny's fault"
LES
"You don't know that"
RITA
"I'm a mother that's all I need to know"
LES
"He never checks anything he'll do business with anyone who'll talk to him"

[Les]They recant how Vince has been in trouble with a bird from Gillingham

RITA
"That snot fair hes was only young and she was a married woman. Anyway there was no proof that anything untoward every happened"
LES
"No proof ! Her husband came back off nightshift and found Vinny's satchel under the bed"

[clifford]As Les is about to leave a message for Vince - who is in court - Clifford passes through having destroyed more property. Rita insists Les doesn't take out his anger on Vince. He gives a hilarious angered monologue about how their scrap has fired on government troops

LES
"[Juanita]We are under investigation - now that's nothing new - but his time its not Scotland yard the inland revenue or Customs and excise - this time its the united bloody nations"

He ends by throwing Vince out of the scrap metal yards. Rita can be heard assembling kitchen wear to throw at him.

Interior - Day - Penny's flat

Vince returns from court

PENNY
"So how did go in court ?"
VINCE
"I punched Adrian .. I am now the living dead"

Vincent is well beaten and has lost most of his businesses

VINCE
"Pinner investments - Pinner enterprises - Pinner offshore holdings - Pinner ferris castings - Pinner securities - Pinner amalgamated - Pinner modes - Pinner kidicare and the cheeky chicken"

Penny looks flabbergasted and there is a gasp for the audience as he reveals he is left with the scrap metal yards knowing they are worth a fortune - not knowing the aggro that is waiting. He has also handed over the wine company. Penny is concerned

VINCE
"I just hope someday she meets a bloke who'll rip her off the way she has me"
PENNY
"What about Daddy"
VINCE
"No he's not the type"

Suddenly Vince becomes distraught - in a rare moment of regret he details how much effort and money the wine company had taken.

VINCE
"Now I've lost it = all for the sake of a quickie"
PENNY
"I beg your pardon"
VINCE
"Divorce - quickie divorce. If I waited another year I could have paid her off in a lump sum"

They cuddle and apologize and Penny recounts her messy divorce. Vince tells her to read the proceedings as he cant face it again. He goes to get a drink

VINCE
"Read it yourself - but remember none of its true"
PENNY
""We are dealing with a person who lives life with a nonchalant disregard for the welfare and happiness of others. Drinking - gambling and wanting propensity for carnal lust epitomises the promiscuous and hedonistic lifestyle which begins and ends in the simple philosophy of simple self gratification""

Penny takes a breather but is drawn to read on. Vince is tipping more brandy down himself

PENNY
""A sneering contempt for that which is decent is equalled by an insatiable pursuit for that which is elicit"."

Penny stands back amazed that Vince has sat through this - She reassures him he did the best think that they are just words and will be forgotten. Vince subsides

VINCE
"Yes I suppose you are right=. But its not easy sitting in a courtroom listening to someone saying things like that about you"
PENNY
"Me this is about me - "Drinking - gambling and wanting propensity for carnal lust" - Me -.. I thought it was about you"
VINCE
"Me ? Why would anyone say that about me ?"

Vince throws back her argument about them just being words. But she is upset

PENNY
"Why didn't Adrian stand up object"
VINCE
"Object ? Adrian was the one who said it"

He explains how it got out of hand and reminds her she said he was right to sit back and do nothing

PENNY
"If you'd felt anything for me you would have punched him"
VINCE
"I did"

Penny storms off and Vince tries to convince her that it a fictitious character "just based on you"

VINCE
"I just hit him to be on the safe side"

Vince pleads with her from behind a slammed door that he needs to speak to someone who wont insult him "In English or Latin" and Penny hands him the cordless phone

VINCE
"Call the talking clock creep"

Credits roll

[Vincent]Vincent sidles in and out of the kitchen and Penny throws bed stuff on to the sofa. He leans back with another drink to listen to his phone messages not knowing what is coming

LES
"Vince - its you father speaking"
VINCE
"Thank god for a friendly voice"
