Voice Over: The 70s popstar who became one of TV's favourite lovebirds

Paul Nicholas: Because I had this singing thing the people at the BBC found it difficult to equate this guy who had been leaping around in a bowler hat with someone who was hopefully making people laugh on television in a romantic comedy.

Clip: Episode 1/Special

Voice Over: Blimey take a loose perm - a shinny suit an oatmeal and tweed twinset and just watch the sparks fly - between our number one lovers from the 80s.

Michael Grade: what really made the show sizzle was the chemistry between the actors but essentially the depth of the characters -we knew exactly who those two people were

Tina Baker: Penny and Vince is like posh bird - working class bloke can it ever work - you know desire and lust - obvious fancy the pants off each other

Clip: Episode 1

Voice Over: yes it was all about unfinished business as a series of flashbacks revealed the baggage between posh and feckless

Clip: Episode Special

Garry Bushell: There shouldn't have been lovers at all but there was an attraction and there was this funny old relationship - they'd been together 2 years and they were going to get married then he pulled out of it = and they were fated to have this love hate relationship

Clip: Episode 7

Paul Nicholas: I suppose he would of thought of Penny as a something that was a little bit untouchable

Garry Bushell: Penny - shes very proper - she didn't given anything away - she wore long dresses - almost frumpy

Paul Nicholas: Penny montage from the Special with the music of Adam And The Ants - "Goody Two Shoes"

Voice Over: But prissy Penny could be pissy - she and Vince had tons of lovers tiffs

Clip: Episode 11

Voice Over: For straight laced Penny Vince's helmet was always getting in the way

Clip: Episode Special

Clip: Episode 3

Paul Nicholas: She was from a different class/background and that was always very tempting to working class boys

Garry Bushell: he was a real wide boy but he was not evil in anyway - he wasn't nasty - he was a bit slippery - he was a little bit

Vince montage from the special to Steve Harley "Come Up And See Me"

David Quantick: Vince was really horrible he was just this sort of skinny git in a horrible Paul calf suit - with his vile footballers mullet and this stupid con man grin

Paul Nicholas: I think I probably look best in a suit - I need some shape to me to look snazzy and I think it was important that Vince looked rather snazzy.

Garry Bushell: He was thew dodgy cockney you just wanted to punch in the face and the just kick in the groin then just throw into the canal

Michael Grade: She was undoubtedly home counties - middle class and he was undoubtable upwardly mobile working class - and there is a certain tension that comes from that - and that made for goody comedy

Clip: Episode ?

Michael Grade: He would have been considered by Penny's mother as a bit of rough and the thing was he broke up that kind of sterile kind of organised existence that she had by being unreliable

[Top Ten TV Lovers]

Garry Bushell: the idea of settling down - the idea of responsibility was a complete opposite to anything he was interested in

Michael Grade: Penny was hopelessly in love with him - he was obviously madly in love with her and like many women in that situation really hoping that he would change

Voice Over: but over 3 series and 21 episodes it was Penny who had to change

Clip: Episode 17

Garry Bushell: they couldn't really get to together until she had come to terms with herself - until she became more self assured about herself - she became a successful person in her own right they could marry when she was as strong character as he was

Voice Over: bless and when Penny and Vince finally did they deed 20 million viewers joined one of TVs biggest ever congregations

Paul Nicholas: I wouldn't say I was sad - no I think there was a danger that you start repeating yourself - you can only have the eon and off thing for so long

Michael Grade: i was heart broken when they got married cos it meant the end of the series and there wouldn't be anymore for me to schedule - so I had very mixed feelings

Voice Over: so TVs favourite lovers walked off into the sunset - leaving the nation wondering what would happen next

Clip: Episode 21

?: I think they're off somewhere now in total and absolute bliss

Paul Nicholas: I think the incessant unreliability of Vince and the stringent persona of Penny would have just pulled them apart - cos as people get older they become caricatures of themselves and all those dreadful traits become worse
